Maxwell Flitton

Founder and CTO

Maxwell Flitton is a software engineer and former nurse who founded Yellow Bird Consulting in 2020 and now works as its CTO. Maxwell achieved his Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Lincoln, UK. While working 12-hour shifts in the A&E departments of hospitals, he obtained another degree in physics from the Open University in the UK. This gave him a good understanding of statistics and sparked an interest in programming. He went on to another milestone, with a postgraduate diploma in physics and engineering in medicine from UCL in London.

In 2017, Maxwell took the leap into full time software engineering, working for a variety of fintech companies in London applying his Python skills. At the same time he became interested in Machine Learning and founded DeployML - an open-source project that aimed to allow easy deployment of machine learning algorithms. He went onwards to work for cutting edge machine learning company, MonolithAI where he applied these skills to industry projects.

Maxwell teamed up with Caroline, another founder of Yellow Bird, to supervise computational medicine students at Imperial College London on various projects in healthcare. After founding Yellow Bird, he went onwards to work on DIVINA - a medical simulation software initially funded by the German Ministry of Health. During this time he became interested in Rust, and deep-dived into learning this complex systems language. He wrote two books, “Rust web programming”, and “Speed up your python with Rust”, for Packt.

Maxwell now works for the open-source database company SurrealDB and is co-authoring the Async Rust Programming book. His work involves building servers in Rust with deployment pipelines and coding core rust components for the SurrealDB engine.
